Treasures of Asia 亞洲之珍寶:Night Markets 夜市

If you travel to pretty much any place in Asia, you will be introduced to the inevitable night market. Night markets are so much more than just a convenient place to get a quick bite to eat.  In the communities where they are located, they serve a much greater purpose for locals.

Food is certainly the foundation of any good night market and the great majority of night markets throughout Asia will not disappoint in this regard.  Delectable consumables range from simple drinks and snacks to full-on feasts and are as customizable as you want them to be.

Not every night market is created equal.

In my experience the location with the best overall night market experience is Taiwan.  Night markets are everywhere, and they range from small and easily navigable to massive sprawling mazes winding through a myriad of streets and alleyways spiraling outward from a central point. Some night markets, Huaxi Street (Snake Alley) and neighboring markets all blend together leaving one unsure where one ends and the next begins.

Night markets serve as cultural, social and experimental center pieces for locals and entrepreneurs.  It is common on any given evening or weekend to head to the market with friends, colleagues or family for an evening of food, fun, games, shopping and meeting people. You will also find aspiring businesspeople, designers, chefs and artists testing markets with all their various creations.

The single best night market I have been to is in Bangkok, Thailand the Jodd Fairs Market in the heart of the city. This market is just simply amazing!

From the moment you first enter the market you are inundated with introductory drink stands followed by a range of clothing vendors.  Making your way through the initial walkway you come upon a large public area with tables and seating for visitors to enjoy food, drinks and company graced by a stage set up nearby with a live band providing legendary English music loved the world over.

Adjacent to the public seating space is a selection of off-shoots into the market selling pretty much anything you could ever want.  Some of the more interesting items for first-time Asian night market visitors include such things as fried insects, mountainous stacks of mutton meat, durian a plenty, all the traditional staples of Thai cuisine and my personal favorite the best mango sticky rice in Bangkok.

Sure, many sell mango sticky rice throughout the market, but the best is in the back half of the market in an area slightly less frequented by masses of people.  You can spot it easily by the colorful rice and the friendly staff offering it to all passersby.

There are carnival style games scattered throughout the market.  Want to try your hand at axe throwing?  I’ve tried it many times and I strongly suggest you go elsewhere once I grasp the haft of one of those bladed beauties.

It is noteworthy that when visiting the market, most of the restrooms are deep in the back of the market and will require 10 baht to access the turnstile gates, so be sure to have some coins with you.

What are you waiting for?  Get your ticket, and get your butt to the Bangkok Jodd Fairs.

Jodd Fairs.
